Why get tested while you travel

Holidays bring new encounters — and sometimes a broken condom or a night you are not quite sure about. Most sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all in the early stages, so testing is the only way to know your status. Whether you have noticed discharge, burning, or sores, or you simply want peace of mind before flying home, STD testing in Koh Samui is quicker, more private, and far less awkward than most travellers expect.

Rapid results or full lab panels — your choice

Samui Medical Clinic runs its own on-site lab, so samples stay in-house unless a specialised panel requires otherwise. Depending on your situation, the doctor may recommend:

• Rapid screening for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B and C, with results while you wait
• Lab-based urine and swab tests for chlamydia and gonorrhoea
• Comprehensive STD panels combining blood, urine, and swab samples for a complete picture
• Follow-up blood tests to confirm a result or re-check after the window period

The doctor will explain window periods honestly. Testing too soon after an exposure can miss an infection — we would rather tell you that upfront than sell you a test that cannot yet answer your question.

What to expect when you walk in

No appointment is needed. You will see an English-speaking doctor in a private consultation room — no waiting-room announcements, no lectures. Tell the doctor what happened and when; that conversation stays in the room. Samples are taken discreetly, results are given to you directly, and if treatment is needed, most medications are dispensed straight from our on-site pharmacy, so there is no handing a prescription across a public counter.

After a high-risk exposure, timing matters

If you may have been exposed to HIV — through unprotected sex, a condom failure with a partner of unknown status, or a needle injury — see a doctor as soon as possible. Preventive treatment is time-critical and works best when started within 72 hours of the exposure. And if you develop severe lower abdominal or testicular pain, a high fever, or feel seriously unwell, go to a hospital emergency department immediately rather than waiting on a test result.

If a condom failed and pregnancy is also a concern, we can provide emergency contraception during the same visit.

Costs, insurance, and confidentiality

Prices depend on which tests you choose, and the doctor confirms costs before anything is done — no surprises. We handle direct billing with most travel insurers where your policy covers the visit, and we can prepare the itemised, discreetly worded paperwork insurers ask for. Every record is kept strictly confidential. Many travellers also add STD screening to a broader health check while they are here; it takes only a few extra minutes at the same visit.
