We assess and treat that lingering chesty cough at our walk-in clinic in Bang Rak, minutes from Samui Airport and the Big Buddha and easy to reach from Chaweng, Bang Rak and Bophut. No appointment is needed and most patients are seen within the hour.

The chest cold that will not quit

A chest cold that settles in and lingers can quietly ruin a Samui holiday. Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry breath down into your lungs. Most cases are viral, arriving on the coat-tails of a cold, the flu, or a sore throat, and the hallmark is a cough that hangs around long after the other symptoms have faded. It often sounds worse than it is, but on the road, far from your own GP, that nagging cough and tight chest deserve a proper look.

Reading the signs on your own body

The cough is usually the loudest complaint. It may start dry and turn productive, bringing up clear, white, yellow or greenish mucus. Coloured phlegm alone does not mean you need antibiotics; it simply reflects your immune cells at work. Alongside the cough you might notice a few of the following.

  • A rattling or wheezing sound when you breathe out
  • Chest tightness or a burning feeling behind the breastbone
  • Breathlessness on stairs, hills or the walk back from the beach
  • A mild fever, aches and a general wrung-out tiredness
  • A hoarse voice and a throat left raw from constant coughing

Acute bronchitis tends to build over a day or two and then slowly settles. When a cough like this returns year after year in a smoker or vaper, we start thinking about chronic bronchitis and longer-term lung health, which is a different conversation worth having.

Getting the right diagnosis, not just any diagnosis

Plenty of holiday coughs are mistaken for bronchitis when they are something else entirely, and the reverse is just as common. Our doctors begin by listening to your lungs and asking how the illness unfolded. If your breathing is laboured, we check your oxygen levels with a fingertip reading. Where the picture is muddy we can run same-day tests through our on-site lab, and a simple blood test in Koh Samui helps us separate a viral chest infection from something bacterial. If a wheeze dominates, we may lean toward asthma treatment in Koh Samui instead. When we suspect pneumonia, a chest x-ray is arranged quickly through our partner network so you are not left guessing.

What treatment actually looks like

Because most bronchitis is viral, antibiotics rarely change the outcome and are reserved for the minority with clear bacterial infection or a high-risk chest. The real work is easing symptoms while your airways calm down. We may prescribe an inhaler to open tight airways, medication to loosen mucus, and something to bring a fever down and dull the aches. Staying well hydrated thins the phlegm so you can clear it, and warm drinks, honey and rest do more than most travellers expect. If dehydration or a rough few days have flattened you, an IV drip in Koh Samui can restore fluids and help you feel human again faster.

When a cough becomes an emergency

Bronchitis is usually a nuisance rather than a danger, but certain signs mean you should not wait. Head to a hospital, or call us straight away, if you experience any of these.

  • Genuine difficulty breathing, gasping, or lips and fingertips turning bluish
  • Coughing up blood, or thick rust-coloured phlegm
  • Chest pain that is severe, crushing, or spreads to the arm or jaw
  • A high fever that will not break, confusion, or fainting
  • A cough dragging past three weeks, or symptoms that keep worsening

People with asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes or a weakened immune system should seek help sooner, as chest infections can escalate more quickly in these groups.

Costs, insurance and reaching us

We keep pricing transparent, with a clear breakdown before treatment and a full receipt and medical report afterwards so nothing is a surprise. We bill most major travel insurers directly, so in many cases you walk out without paying upfront. As a walk-in clinic no appointment is needed, and most patients are seen within the hour. If your chest feels too heavy to leave your room, our doctors make hotel and villa visits island-wide, and there is a doctor on call 24 hours for anything that cannot wait until morning. Call us on +66 83 150 2520, message us on WhatsApp, or drop into the clinic in Bang Rak, minutes from Samui Airport and the Big Buddha and easy to reach from Chaweng, Bang Rak and Bophut. If you would rather speak first, a telemedicine consultation in Koh Samui can point you in the right direction from wherever you are staying.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still fly home with bronchitis?

Most people with a mild chest infection can fly, but a bad cough, breathlessness or low oxygen levels can be aggravated by cabin pressure. Let our doctor examine you first; we can advise on timing and, if you are well enough, issue a fit-to-fly assessment before your flight.

Should I keep going to the gym or diving while I recover?

Give strenuous exercise a rest until the cough and breathlessness ease, and avoid scuba diving entirely while your airways are inflamed, as congestion and coughing at depth are dangerous. Gentle walks are fine. Ask us when it is safe to get back in the water.

My cough is keeping the whole room awake at night. What helps?

Night coughs are common because mucus pools when you lie flat. Prop yourself up on extra pillows, sip warm water or honey drinks before bed, and keep the room from getting too cold and dry. If it is relentless, we can prescribe something to settle it so you both sleep.

Is it worth coming in, or will this just clear on its own?

Many cases do settle by themselves, but a doctor can confirm it is bronchitis and not pneumonia, asthma or something needing antibiotics, and rule out anything serious. If you are breathless, feverish or simply worried, a quick visit buys peace of mind and the right treatment.

Could the Samui heat, dust or pollution be making it worse?

Tropical humidity, road dust, temple incense and seasonal haze can all irritate inflamed airways and prolong a cough. So can strong air-conditioning that dries the throat. We will suggest practical ways to limit exposure while your chest recovers.

Can I get the medicines I need without a hospital trip?

Yes. We have a pharmacy on site, so once the doctor has seen you, inhalers, cough medicine and any prescription can be dispensed under one roof. If you have run out of a regular medication, we can also handle a prescription refill during the same visit.

How soon should I start to feel better after treatment?

The fever and aches usually fade within a few days, while the cough is the last symptom to go and can linger for two to three weeks even as you improve. If you are not turning the corner after a week, or you slide backwards, come back and we will reassess.

I have asthma and now a chest infection. Does that change anything?

It does. Bronchitis can trigger an asthma flare, so keep using your reliever and tell us about your condition. We may adjust your inhalers and watch you more closely, since asthma, COPD and other lung conditions raise the risk of a chest infection turning serious.
