Ear cleaning in Koh Samui

Gentle, professional ear wax removal and swimmer’s-ear care at our walk-in clinic in Chaweng — open daily with English-speaking doctors.

Why ears get blocked on holiday

Koh Samui is hard on ears. Daily swimming pushes water into the ear canal, where it makes ear wax swell and trap moisture behind it. Add tropical humidity, earplugs on the flight over and earbuds by the pool, and it is no surprise that blocked ears are one of the most common complaints we treat at our Chaweng clinic. Most people arrive describing the same thing: muffled hearing on one side, a feeling of fullness, sometimes a crackling sound or a mild ache after snorkelling.

Please do not reach for cotton buds or hotel-room “ear candles” — both tend to push wax deeper, and they can scratch the canal and open the door to infection. Professional removal is quick, safe and usually a relief within minutes.

How we clean ears at Samui Medical Clinic

Ear cleaning in Koh Samui at our clinic starts with an otoscope examination, so the doctor can see exactly what is causing the blockage before touching anything. Depending on what we find, the doctor may use:

  • Gentle irrigation with warm water at controlled pressure to flush out softened wax
  • Manual removal with fine instruments under direct vision for stubborn or impacted wax
  • Softening drops first, if the wax is too hard to remove safely in one visit

The whole appointment usually takes 15–30 minutes, and we check both ears before you leave. If the doctor finds an inflamed or infected canal rather than simple wax, we can move straight to ear infection treatment in the same visit — our on-site pharmacy stocks everything you are likely to need.

Swimmer’s ear: when it is more than wax

Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is irritation or infection of the ear canal itself, and it is extremely common among divers, snorkellers and daily swimmers here. Suspect it if your ear is itchy, painful to touch or tug, leaking fluid, or getting steadily more sore rather than just muffled. A blocked ear that hurts deserves a proper doctor consultation rather than a wait-and-see approach — ear canal infections in a warm, wet climate rarely settle on their own.

Seek emergency hospital care immediately if you have severe ear pain with a high fever, sudden hearing loss, dizziness with vomiting, facial weakness, or redness and swelling spreading behind the ear.
