Ear infection treatment in Koh Samui
Swimmer’s ear and middle-ear infections diagnosed and treated the same day at our walk-in clinic in Chaweng — no appointment needed.
Why ear infections are so common on Samui
Between the sea, hotel pools and year-round humidity, ears on Koh Samui rarely get a chance to dry out. Trapped water softens the skin of the ear canal and lets bacteria multiply — the classic recipe for swimmer’s ear (otitis externa). Middle-ear infections (otitis media) are a different problem, often following a cold or a flight, and are especially common in children. Either one can turn a beach holiday miserable within a day or two, and neither tends to improve while you keep swimming.
Swimmer’s ear or middle-ear infection?
They feel different, and they are treated differently:
- Swimmer’s ear — itching or sharp pain in the ear canal that gets worse when you tug the earlobe or chew, sometimes with discharge or a blocked, wet feeling after swimming, snorkelling or diving.
- Middle-ear infection — a deep, throbbing ache with pressure, muffled hearing and often fever, typically arriving on the heels of a cold, sinus congestion or a long flight.
Our English-speaking doctors examine the ear with an otoscope, identify which type you have and start treatment on the spot — usually medicated ear drops for canal infections, or oral medication when the middle ear is involved. If wax or debris is blocking the canal, gentle ear cleaning is done first so the drops can actually reach the infection.
Ear infection treatment in Koh Samui — what to expect at our clinic
Samui Medical Clinic is a walk-in clinic in central Chaweng, open daily with a doctor on call 24 hours. Our on-site lab and pharmacy mean you leave with a diagnosis and everything you need in a single visit — no chasing prescriptions around the island. If ear pain has you stuck at your resort, we also send a doctor to hotels and villas island-wide.
Divers and snorkellers: tell the doctor about your dive plans. We will check whether your ears are safe to equalise and advise how long to stay out of the water so the infection does not come back worse mid-trip.
When it is more than an earache
Go straight to a hospital emergency department if ear pain comes with a stiff neck, severe headache, high fever with confusion or drowsiness, redness and swelling spreading behind the ear, sudden facial weakness or sudden hearing loss. These complications are rare, but they need urgent hospital care rather than a clinic visit.
Costs, insurance and getting seen today
A clinic consultation costs far less than a private hospital emergency visit for the same problem. We offer direct billing with most travel insurers and issue full English medical reports and receipts for reimbursement. Not sure whether your symptoms need an in-person exam? Start with a quick telemedicine consultation and we will tell you honestly. Walk in any day, message us on WhatsApp, or call +66 83 150 2520 — most patients looking for ear infection treatment in Koh Samui are examined, treated and back to their holiday within the hour.
